Teen Link Outreach & Education Specialist

 

Job Summary:  The Teen Link Outreach & Education Specialist is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with King County schools. This is accomplished through meetings with school faculty and administrators, and scheduling and presenting the Youth Suicide Prevention Curriculum to junior and senior high school students. Additional focus will be placed on raising awareness of the program’s services through general community outreach. Some phone line supervision, program development, community outreach and volunteer management will also be expected.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED:

 

·         BA in social services or related field preferred

·         Experience in working with youth/ youth serving agencies

·         Experience in mental health/crisis intervention/telephone helpline

·         Experience in presenting trainings and presentations

·         Excellent written and oral communication skills

·         Demonstrated commitment to working with, and empowering, youth.

·         WA. State Driver’s License, current insurance, and access to a reliable car during work hours

·         Flexibility to work some evenings/week-ends

STARTING SALARY:  $12.00 hr., plus medical and dental insurance, vacation, sick leave, holidays and personal leave days.

Competencies

 

A.  COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION  (60%)

 

1.    Deliver Youth Suicide Prevention Presentations and Teen Link program presentations to King County schools and youth serving community agencies.

2.    Develop and maintain positive working relationships with school contacts through meetings with counselors and outreach booths each semester.

3.    Represent program by staffing booths at youth serving community events and fairs. During summer months this will be the main focus when not giving presentations and will require evening and weekend flexibility.

4.    Foster collaborations with schools and other youth-serving organizations, particularly those that serve ethnic minority youth.

5.    Recruit teen/adult volunteers for Youth Suicide Speakers Bureau.

6.    Assist in production and distribution of the Where to Turn for Teens resource guides and other program materials.

 

B.  PHONE LINE SUPERVISION  (15%)

 

  1. Supervise Teen Link help line in evening (approx. 3 - 4 shifts per month).
  2. Provide emotional support, specific behavioral feedback and assistance with community resource referrals to teen phone workers on shift.
  3. Provide debriefing as necessary for teen phone workers after calls/shifts.
  4. Assess needs, problems, and concerns of phone workers and clearly communication those to Youth Services Manager.
  5. Assure accurate data collection of calls by teen phone workers and evaluate teen phone workers, as assigned by Youth Services Manager.
  6. Assist with evening projects, such as mailings and volunteer inquiries, as assigned by Youth Services Manager.

 

C. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE (15%)

 

1.     Assist with recruitment, orientation, screening, and retention of volunteers.

2.     Assist in training of teen volunteers, both at the Crisis Clinic and in the community (requires evening and weekend flexibility). 

3.     Work with Youth Services Manager to continue developing strategies, collaborations, and training for anti-oppression/anti-racism work.

4.     Assure accuracy of volunteer program and volunteer data entered.

5.     Maintain and enter data for presentations and caller demographics.
