Resource Lists – To Make or Not to Make, That is the Question!
While well-intentioned, a resource list may be out of date as soon as it is printed, not to mention misleading if important eligibility information is left off. That’s why Resource Center staff is increasingly concerned by resource lists that are copied (often from Crisis Clinic’s online database), pasted and distributed via email or printed in local newsletters. We know there is a demand for information about seasonal and/or topical resources, but too many lists leave out important referral details or are out of date as soon as they’re printed.

Resource Center staff at King County 2-1-1 takes resource information very seriously. Tasked with maintaining the database used by King County 2-1-1, Crisis Line, Teen Link, Washington Recovery Help Line and available to the public online, AIRS-certified Resource Specialists ensure information is accurate by actively pursuing updates from agency contacts, attending meetings, reading newsletters and following up on tips from callers.

Critical details about accessing services, including hours, eligibility information, fees and application instructions are maintained because they are the building blocks of a good referral. Dedicated staff makes sure that the King County 2-1-1 database is constantly evolving, and it remains the best source of information about social services in our region.

With all of this in mind, is it still possible to create an effective resource list? Crisis Clinic, for example, uses these principles to maintain various Shelter and Emergency Services brochures, updated at least quarterly, and hopes to have them available in “real time” in the near future. You’re welcome to download and share these brochures, just remember to check in for an updated copy regularly!

·         Go to www.211KingCounty.org

·         Click on “Community Resources Online”

·         Click “Start a Search”

·         Under “Keyword” use any of these terms, or just follow the link:

o   Christmas Baskets

o   Christmas Meals

o   Christmas Parties

o   Hanukkah Programs

o   Holiday Adoption Programs

o   Holiday Gifts/Toys

·         Use any King County ZIP code to narrow your search.

·         If you type these terms in exactly as they appear above, you should get all of our results. Most food basket and gift programs are very ZIP code specific. Be sure to open up the listings and check the eligibility field to make sure your client lives in one of the eligible zip codes. Check the application field as well, as some programs require that clients pre-register by a certain date to receive services.

You can also call 2-1-1 for help accessing holiday resources.

Please DO NOT print multiple copies of these lists for distribution as the information changes very frequently!

WA State Medicaid Lifts 3-visit Limit on Non-emergency Use of Emergency Rooms
Health Care Authority Director Doug Porter said he is lifting a month-old three-visit limit on non-emergency use of hospital emergency rooms after a Thurston County Superior Court judge held the state did not follow proper rule-making procedures in establishing the limit. Medicaid began notifying providers immediately after the ruling that HCA’s emergency amendment to WAC 182-550-1200 establishing the three visit emergency room limitation was invalid due to an improper use of the Administrative Procedure Act’s emergency rule process. Judge Paula Casey’s decision was based on the technical aspects of rule-making, not the three-visit limit itself. Porter said he had ordered his staff to revisit rulemaking procedures involved in the judge’s order and to correct the deficiencies.

New Legal Financial Obligations (LFO) Community Legal Clinic
The clinic will take place at Village of Hope in West Seattle (9421 18th Ave. SW), every second and fourth Monday of the month, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM.  Individuals can call the clinic number at (206) 287-8625 and request an appointment. Callers will be screened for income eligibility (must be below 125% of Federal Poverty Level) and told what materials to bring.

Safe Parking Program
Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Ballard will help launch a Safe Parking program to help homeless families living in their cars this winter. The Our Redeemer’s Safe Parking task force group is currently working with organizations to make the Safe Parking Pilot Program a reality.  Anticipated partnerships include the City of Seattle, the State of Washington, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church (fiscal agent for the approved state funding), and Ballard Community Task force on Homelessness. Selection of an organization to provide screening, case management, and human service resources for the program is underway.
