Back to School Resource Guide

Summer is drawing to a close, and September kicks off a busy month for parents and children - as well as adults who are returning to school. It is important to be prepared for the challenges of school year ahead, so we've compiled a list of resources for topics that may be helpful to you, your clients or people you know. Visit Community Resources Online and search for topics below to find programs in your area.

Vaccinations and Immunizations
Public Health Centers provide routine childhood vaccines and immunizations on a sliding scale to low-income families. No child is turned away without receiving the required vaccines due to an inability to pay. There have been changes to this year's vaccination requirements for entry to grades K-12 and to attend child care or preschool. The seasonal flu vaccine is recommended for all children who are age six months through 18 years. Parents should also consider vaccinating their children against the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, which is expected to make a resurgence this fall. A vaccine is being developed that will be recommended but not required for children. It may become available locally as soon as October, and it will be distributed widely. For more information, call the Public Health Hotline at (206) 296-4949 or visit the Public Health Web site.

Free School Supplies
Search with keywords "Free School Supplies" at Community Resources Online - but be aware that many programs began in August, and have run out of school supplies - so make sure there are supplies left and apply as soon as possible.

Support Services for Homeless Students
Search with keywords "Homeless School Transition Programs" on Community Resources Online to find programs that help support children who are homeless by identifying a school that they will attend on a consistent basis throughout the year regardless of the family's current location and by offering services that they need to succeed. Some programs offer transportation between shelters and school, clothing that is appropriate for a school environment, books and other educational materials and special classes that help the homeless child deal with issues such as personal hygiene and health care in a homeless setting.

Before- and After-School Programs
Search with keywords "Extended Day Care" on Community Resources Online to find programs are available that provide supervised care for school-age children before and after the end of the school day and on school holidays to working parents. The program may provide a set of activities including recreation, exercise or homework help.

Financial Aid for Unemployed Adults
President Obama recently announced that unemployed workers receiving unemployment benefits may qualify for financial aid for education and job training. The Federal Pell Grant program can provide up to $5,350 for educational costs at community colleges, colleges and universities, and many trade and technical schools. This is only one example of several federal student aid programs available to assist unemployed workers. Visit the Web site at www.opportuntity.gov or contact your local Worksource office.
